NDP 2007 Appreciation Function

without comments

Yeah, I promise to upload the NDP Appreciation Function on blog. This NDP Appreciation Function is host to thank the organisers and the sponsors for the success of the NDP 2007. The main extract of the NDP 2007 can be viewed below.

Speech by Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen, at the NDP 2007 Appreciation Reception

Posted: 27 Aug 2007, 2055 hours (Time is GMT +8 hours)

First, thank you for receiving me, I feel a bit awkward, because I feel that it’s I who should stand up and salute you, all of you who have put in so much for making the National Day Parade a resounding success, so I applaud and thanks to you.

It was an excellent job, you know it, you saw the looks on people’s faces, when you went back and told your family that you were a participant of the National Day Parade, I’m sure there was an inner glow and great pride, so I don’t have to tell you that it was spectacular. You have made Singaporeans proud and our National Day special. I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to everyone here tonight for making NDP 2007 such a spectacular success.

The “NDP 2007 Special Moments” video captured many of the highlights. But a 5-minute video cannot do justice to the many hours of sweat and sacrifice, and I am told that there were many hours of sweat and sacrifice many times. I know that you wanted to expose the show to many more audiences and because of that, you came back many times and I know that you put in great effort to give Singaporeans a National Day to remember.

This NDP’s organisers and participants can rightly claim many “firsts” in this year’s NDP celebrations. As we have said before, the most significant was our move from the traditional venue at the National Stadium to a totally new venue – the floating platform at the Marina Bay conceptualised by the Singapore Combat Engineers and constructed specially for this NDP celebrations. As Minister Teo Chee Hean said – he’s away – this was not a “top-down” initiative, but a ground-up one. In fact, if I can quote him, “chuay dai zi” (making things difficult for oneself). The brief, really was to organise an NDP, after the National Stadium was decommissioned. He said to the Organising Committee to look at the alternate possible sites. They looked around, Marina South was a possible site. They came back and they said, “Unexciting.” So they said, “Can we build a floating platform?”

This was the time when Minister Teo Chee Hean must have said, “Chuay dai zi. You want to do it, You carry on. But build it before the time, the budget and go for it.”

This reflected a strong desire and self-motivation to give to Singaporeans something special; not give enough to be at the site you’ve chosen, let’s look at possibilities, let’s not be bound by man-made constraints and let’s think the impossible. You will now agree with me that you overcame challenges and turned them into winning solutions.

One challenge was the seating capacity. Many of you know, the old National Stadium can seat 60,000. The venue at Marina Bay can only accommodate 27,000; so the Organising Committee said how can we allow more Singaporeans to watch this wonderful spectacle? As a result, the practices were opened to the public. I was told, about 150,000 Singaporeans had the privilege of seeing the NDP and I am not sure this includes all the people standing by the side.

The venue at the Marina Bay also provided other new possibilities. With the floating platform set in a waterfront setting, the organisers could use the waters in the bay and the skies above as natural extensions of the performance stage. Visually stunning. In fact, when I remembered when the Organising Committee presented the concept, our brief back to them was “No no no, too ambitious. Work out the logistics, make sure no one falls into the water.” Because they were talking about these floating animals, walking at the side of the pontoon.

But good soldiers listen to only some parts, and for the first time, the SAF put up an integrated defence display, our dynamic display, many people were wowed. We showed the three Services, the Army, Navy and the Airforce, we showed what the Third Generation SAF was capable of. And with the city skyline as a natural backdrop, the light, sound, water and pyrotechnics, water fountains that gyrated with the music, and even our Special Forces doing a rappelling under the Fireworks Curtain. Even though that was somewhat unplanned. I am glad no one was hurt. But people said the NDP made very clever use of the space.

Last but not least, we used the locations around it. For the first time, there was a National Day Festival from 18 July to 26 August, with many side events that brought many people in. And not only have Singaporeans noticed, others from as far as Edinburgh, Malaysia, Indonesia, are saying they should follow Singapore, this gives us a problem because we are not always the poster boys for the people around us. But it tells us of the message that has gone out.

To me, the most significant contribution of the organisation, the participants and the sponsors who made this possible was how we demonstrated the “can-do” spirit. Every year, we choose a different theme, this year’s NDP theme “A City of Possibilities”. I thought to myself what would have happened if we chose the parade to happen at Marina South. So to me, the real achievement was that you walked the talk, you made people believe through the NDP show that we are a city of possibilities, that we can achieve great things, if we act on our dreams and not be daunted by obstacles.

It is a reflection of what is possible with good leadership, teamwork, determination and effort and it was possible because Singaporeans from all walks of life wanted to make this possible, wanted to show others that we can achieve great things. It required wholehearted dedication, considerable sacrifices made, lots of practices and I have received numerous compliments from people from all walks of life. Because after the National Day Parade, there is usually post NDP dinners and you get snippets from visiting dignitaries. Many said it was a world class show. Others was impressed by the attention to detail. Someone said to me, that your SAF boys are very polite. I said, “Not really, they will shoot you if need to.” How is it that we managed to bring in tens of thousands, on time, smiling, making all the drinks. It showed the attention to detail. How you can take the sponsor stickers out of the bag, because previously, it’s okay to leave it in the bag, but previous feedback was that if you leave the tag there, people will not use it, which defeats the purpose of the bag. The multi-coloured strip that you can strip down, and the attention to detail. The result was that we left an indelible impression on thousands of spectators and people outside Singapore. The only people who should be worried are the people in next year’s committee because you have set a high standard and I know that that next year there is Beijing Olympics to compete with. I am sure next year’s committee has taken note of this year’s details and things to improve on. There are always things to improve on.

So, my sincere thanks to the many corporate and individual sponsors who have contributed generously to make this celebration possible because every National Day Parade is a milestone for us and I certainly hope for the sponsors that you continue to join us and to make these exciting moments and challenges possible for us.

NDP 2007 showcased basically, how Singaporeans from all walks of life came together to make possible a most spectacular celebration of our nation’s independence. The Parade fired the imagination of many Singaporeans and gave real meaning to the vision of Singapore as a “City of Possibilities”. Indeed, it was a powerful statement about Singapore and how we have a lot to look forward to as a Nation, together.

Once again, on behalf of the Government of Singapore, I thank all of you for making NDP 2007 a resounding success and a very meaningful celebration for many Singaporeans. I wish you all the best in the years ahead and look forward to your continued support for future NDPs.

You Colour My Life . . .

without comments

I was going through my blog stats today. Yeah, I’m on medical leave today, down with a fever. I guess it was the heavy rain that causes me to come down with a fever. I got a lashing down from dear. She knew that I had to be out in the afternoon running some errands for her. And nonetheless, I still didn’t use my brolly. I told myself, well, it’s just a short distance away from the taxi stand. Thus I did not use my brolly. I ran a distance to the taxi stand and was “actually slightly” drenched. I got to tell you that I started shivering from cold the moment I got into the taxi, and as well as in the office. Subsequent to that I started to run a temperature. I rang up dear to tell her that I will be making a trip to the company’s doctor before making a trip down to TP for the night’s lecture.

She was apparently upset that I had not been using my brolly. Nevertheless, she did shimmer down after a while. She decided to let me have a quiet journey on the train to Tampines. My class is slightly on the hyper-side today. They seem to be very energetic today. Well, have to raise my voice slightly and have to be slightly stern in class. I gave dear a call, just to inform her that I felt better after my medication.

Alright, back to the blog stats. I saw this interesting blog. It’s the header image that caught my eye. It’s Mei Juan’s blog. A student of mine in my Digital Architecture Drawing class, she’s very quiet throughout my class. I kind of love her blog, as it’s very clean very innocent and very light to read. It’s a good way to start off my morning. Hm . . . I guess, shall I cancelled my leave on Friday?

Don’t know let’s see.

Dear . . .I dare not do it . . .(but will do it, to add spice to our relationship!)

without comments

Yesterday, I . . . I did something that I would not do or something that I might not have the guts to do it.

Well, I have get to know my dear for almost 5 months now. I don’t know about something. Maybe it is this thing that made our relationship grows. Since, dear has changed her working hours and days. We have decided to see each other only on Sundays. And we will make it a point to meet for breakfast, or dinner whenever we can on week days. And dear will always meet me at my workplace, or near the place where I work. Well, please don’t curse and swear at me. The reason, why she would meet me at or near my place is because, she’s driving. Cool! I mean, she ride a bike! Hey that’s cool! Imagine she went to meet her clients riding a bike! Alright, put that aside. She had wanted me to go take up my advance theory again. I said yeah I will. Well, whenever we went out during the weekends, we would take the public transport. And we love that, all for the course that we can spent more intimate time together. We like that. Furthermore, having the entire Sunday to ourselves is so romantic and loving! We are simply in a world of our own.

Hm…yesterday I told dear that I should stop calling her Cat. I should call her Jenny or Dear. Why would I want to call her that? Well, you see I’m pretty wild and jumpy. After knowing her, she sort of like taming me and keeping me quiet and I like that! It makes me wonder and ponder that I have to become skilled at such conduct, as we would have to settle down and start our family. Despite the fact that it’s still too early to mention about starting a family at this point of time. And I like the way she control my cash. We have made plans. We have plans for ourselves. And in Singapore, it’s all about cash. Everything you mention has cash value in it. And the cost of living here is so high, Dear told me she doesn’t want to settle down in her home land Malaysia, as she dislike there. So I guess, we can decide to stay here.

Talking about yesterday. I did something that I will not or try not to do. That is I accidentally scare her. I told her that I have something to tell her. She got a shock and text me straight away, I guess it’s about less than 1 minutes. I just want to tell her how much I love her and miss her! And guess what her reply is? She dares me to do it again! I instantly text her back and apologies for scaring her. Thank goodness she isn’t mad at me. Ha! Blessing in disguise . . . and I’m looking forward to a breakfast with her on Wednesday, before, she say goodbye, as she would be going back home to Meleka for a good 4 days.

Yeah . . . its late and I want to turn in . . . early, I have a long day tomorrow. I will blog on my NDP Appreciation Reception soon which I just attended a few hours ago.

Lecture at TP Design School . . .

without comments

I had started lecturing at TP Design School recently. Specialising mostly in Digital Architecture Media and Drawing. I am blessed to have such a nice bunch of students. They are such a lovely horde who shows a staunch impression of fervour to become skilled at the essential drawing and presentation skills that each designers and architects should process. Although the class size is about 20, it is very imperative that special awareness has to be placed on each personality. I realised after 2 lessons, some of the students could catch it quite fast, while some institute the whim of trepidation. And I personally believe that as a lecturer, one should not identify himself or herself as a lecturer. As such by doing so, you might instil fear rather than respect to your students. And on the other hand, you must not try to be nice; you should also instil a sense of authority to your students. In this manner, you could earn them the respect that you would secure at the end of the day.

Cat knows that I have started lecturing at TP during the evening. At the initial stage she had expressed some notion of uneasiness. It is not due to the sense that I am giving her less time; it is mainly due to the fact that she’s afraid that I might get too fatigue from these evenings. As she knows that I had to leave office at half 3 just to get there by 5pm to lecture. My day doesn’t starts here for lecturing. There are times, I have to attend some discussion my CM and SL to get a better understanding of lecturing profession and at the same time to brief them on status of the class. My day at TP would usually begin with a trip to my office then down to the GO to get my lecture notes printed out. And then it would be back to office again to take a quick bite and rest before my lecture commence at 6pm.

Right, where am I coming at? Oh yeah, I am suppose to introduce to you 2 of my students’ blog. They created this blog on the rationale of market their own line of fashion. These are mainly female fashion wears that might interest some of you. They are created by Stephanie and Shi Hui respectively. I do strongly encourage you to take a look, who knows some of you might get interested in it and get a piece or two from them.

I will try to post some pictures of my class whenever I got a chance to do so. Maybe I should do it after or during my evaluation on the 3rd September.

without comments

1

without comments

without comments

Part 1

This week . . .Officially a Lecturer . . .!

without comments

I attended a 2 days training at Temasek Polytechnic for the last 2 days. All new lecturers, adjunct and associate lecturers have to go through a year or 2 days training. Our class size was small; there are only about 12 of us. It’s a unique class, as we have lawyer, civil engineer, a vet, an aero-engineer, and many others. I thought at first, this would be another class, where everyone would be very quiet to them, after-all it’s a 2 days session. Nonetheless, I’m wide of the mark. We became friends shortly. We shared jokes, we laughed at each other, and we have fun. Over these 2 days, we were taught on how to handle students, types of students, we are going to face and how to manage types of learning situation and how to introduce active learning and types of learning strategies. That was a fun days that I had at TP. Though it was short however, we learnt a great deal of knowledge from our lecturers. They brought with them vast amount of experiences to share with us.

My staff passes . . . From Temasek Poly and my NDP Staff pass for Preview (Actual day coming in a few days time . . .and my NDP 08 pass coming soon too . . .)

I told Cat that I’m attending classes these 2 days, as she was puzzled why I wasn’t in my office. In fact, it was my fault, as I had forgotten to inform her that I will be away on course. She was the first one to know that I will be lecturing part-time at TP Design School; she’s the first to know that I will be away on most evenings, as my class starts only in the evening. I guess that is perfectly alright. Since, we have chosen to spend our time during our precious weekends. As she felt that on week days, I should have more time to rest since; my work load is remarkably dissimilar from hers. Though, she would only finish her work at about 10pm.

We celebrated our 3 month anniversary last Sunday. I bought her a necklace and that was the time that she officially held my hand. That was a really special moment. I surprised her with the present while we were shopping. She had told me that she’s looking for a necklace to match her pendent. So I guess I better pretend not to know anything at all. Then, as we walk on, I will surprise her. Well this idea works. We shopped for lingerie, I told her to take her time, as I sat down in the shop, clearing my office and private mails away on my mobile. I guess it took an hour, I’m ok with that. It’s perfectly alright. I have no qualms on getting her stuffs that she likes, as I truly value her, since she watches my spending and wallet real tight. We would not spend unnecessarily when we were out. I conjecture that was the way Cat was brought up in her family. She did confess to me that her education level wasn’t high. And I have told her my feeling on this issue. I told her education level will not have any outcome on our relationship. Furthermore, I told her that, I will accommodate her, and would rather she not accommodate me. This very moment is just so touching that I could almost see tears in her eye.

Well, since today and tomorrow, I’m will be at home, I thought why not I pen it down on my blog. Cat’s away to her hometown, spending time with her parents, I will visit her parents in December, right-after our vacation trip. I have thought of going to Taiwan, China or Korea. I will let her decide when she’s back. Alright I guess that’s it for now. Will be back soon with more posts.
